Godex G500 vs Zebra ZD620: The Honest Comparison

Having distributed both brands in Quebec for 20 years, we have a unique position to tell you when to choose Godex and when to invest in a Zebra. The answer isn't always what you'd expect.

The Technical Facts Side by Side

The Godex G500 (203 dpi, 5 IPS, 4.25 inches, USB/Serial/Ethernet) sells for about 40% less than a Zebra ZD620 with comparable specs. Both models support direct thermal and thermal transfer, both have network connectivity, and both print at identical speeds under normal conditions.

The difference lies in mechanical durability and software support. Zebra publishes an ecosystem of drivers, configuration utilities, and APIs (Zebra Link-OS) that integrate natively with almost every ERP and WMS on the market. Godex uses its EZPL language compatible with ZPL II, which covers 95% of use cases but sometimes requires a configuration adjustment.

When Godex Is the Best Choice

  • Tight budget, moderate volume: For a shipping station printing 500 to 1,500 labels per day, the G500 or GE300 (203 dpi, economical) do exactly the job at 40% of the price of an equivalent Zebra.
  • Multi-site rollout: If you need to equip 10 stations across several warehouses, the savings per unit add up significantly — without sacrificing operational reliability.
  • Standard receiving/shipping logistics: Code 128, Code 39, QR, PDF417 barcodes on paper labels — Godex prints them as precisely as a Zebra.

When You Should Choose Zebra Instead

  • Complex software integration: If your ERP uses native Zebra APIs, the direct Zebra Link-OS integration dramatically simplifies IT setup.
  • Intensive 24/7 production: Zebra ZT (industrial) mechanisms are designed for 10,000+ labels/day without intensive maintenance. Godex industrial is good, but Zebra keeps an edge in longevity on very high volumes.
  • RFID: Zebra dominates in UHF RFID — the ZT421R and ZQ620 Plus offer mature RFID encoding tested in real Quebec conditions.
  • Medical: Zebra Healthcare (ZD421-HC, ZD621-HC) is the only line with hospital disinfectant resistance certification.

Our Direct Recommendation

Retail, e-commerce, standard shipping, small warehouses → Godex G500 or GE300 without hesitation. Industrial production, RFID, medical, complex ERP integration → Zebra ZT or ZD series.
